Equal Yoga - Rozengracht 191

I am a yoga instructor and I was very disappointed to hear how some of my students were treated at this studio. I suggested to them that they should check out some yoga while they were visiting Amsterdam. After the class, they were told that they wouldn't be allowed to participate in the future, for no other reason than one student's age: he is 13. The instructor, Robbert, told my students that he is too young, and that kids can't do yoga. "You don't see kids doing acrobatics". This very student does acrobatics. Haven't you heard of the Olympics? The acrobatics and gymnastics are dominated by children. As a yoga instructor, I can tell you that disallowing kids in a yoga class is absolutely backwards. No one can benefit more from yoga than a child, and teaching yoga to a child has an even greater impact on the future than teaching yoga to an adult. As yoga teachers, we should count ourselves lucky for the opportunity to teach a child, and we should be welcoming kids in the door *first*, as the most important students. Nowhere on the website did it say that children are not allowed, even though they had to input their birthdays in order to sign up. Not only that, but Robbert was confused and tried to put another of my students in the wrong spot when it said clearly on her ticket where she was supposed to be sitting, arguing with her about it in front of the whole class. His voice was unengaging, harsh, and unrelaxing, not a soft teacher's voice. He was totally lacking the empathy and understanding a good yoga teacher should have. All this teacher's negative behavior took away from the focused, meditative atmosphere that's supposed to be created. This goes against ahimsa, the rule of nonviolence, and asteya, the rule of non-stealing, since he's stealing a child's opportunity to participate. Children are the future. Remember, this is supposed to be "Equal" yoga.

Amazing hot yoga studio, such great design and interior. The studios are large enough and the teachers are super nice. They also have an app available to enroll for classes which makes it so easy to apply.

Today I watched a woman ride in the WRONG direction on the Rozengracht, as FAST as she could go, on the SIDEWALK for almost entire 2 blocks just before 11am, into Equal yoga. The sidewalk was crowded as she dodged people. I went in to point out the woman to the receptionist who didn't care at all and I left very angry. Remind your clients that this is a neighborhood, people live here, and use some common sense. Not cool at all!

Not all teachers are that good, but some are great! I especially enjoy the strong flow by Henry. Some yin is nice, 45-minute classes can be great, but some lack a bit flow and more gymnastics than yoga imo. The facility itself is great.

I have been to few classes and I really recommend this place.I It is clean and they pay attention to hygiene. Last time I had a problem with onefit, I was desperate and they really try to help me and accepted me. The class was wonderful, exactly what I needed, Roxane the barre teacher explained very well, gave options, check the students if they were doing well the movements to protect their back and knee. I love EQUAL yoga. It's clean, and the teachers are very polite, professional, and I was impressed that they remember people's names. So this review is based on my experience with the 7:00 am classes. I would call elite teachers Renee, Kyla, Henry, Alessandra, Kate, Sander, and Josje. They know how to navigate a class; they speak in a clear, confident voice with explicit instructions, which helps me surrender to the pose, breath - class. When teachers don't give clear guidance, I tend to look around the room to see if I am doing it right. I tend to leave the class very fulfilled, having been a yoga teacher myself years back - with these five individuals. I have had teachers at EQUAL where I did not have this experience - but that does not mean they are doing something wrong - it's just I do not feel I got what I need as to why I go to yoga. EQUAL has over 30 teachers over several locations - so my experience is based on a handful of teachers that do the morning classes Monday to Sunday on the Rozengracht. Pricing: it's good value for money. I wish they had a wider range in bundle prices and the website has inconsistent glitches every now and then: that would be my only feedback

I have been coming here for nearly a year now and I absolutely recommend! In the meantime, I got my preferred teachers and courses. Since they have so many different teachers and classes it’s good to explore a few first if you are new. I personally prefer the hot fusion sessions on Monday evening and Saturday morning! In general all classes are mixed with advanced and absolute beginner yogis (like me). The facilities are modern and very clean. Personally I would like to see a smaller and consistent set of yoga teachers so the classes become more personal. Even after one year I see new yoga teachers every week. But for the rest, this is definitely a good place to be :)
