Zee en handel
De zee houdt de Friezen van oudsher bezig. Hij vormt een grens die dreigt en beschermt, en biedt tegelijkertijd geweldige kansen. Bevaar hem en vindt nieuwe schatten, gooi je net uit en vang verse vis, bouw een haven en ontvang mensen uit alle hoeken van de wereld om handel mee te drijven. Zelfs de Vikingen wisten Friesland te vinden en waren met hun rijkdom een graag geziene gast.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ook Workum heeft zijn fontein, die in het kader van het 11Fountains-project (Leeuwarden Culturele Hoofdstad 2018) is geplaatst. Tegelijk is de buitenruimte (hier: de passantenhaven) onder handen genomen, waardoor deze plek van Workum (met uitzicht op de oude kerk) echt aan waarde gewonnen heeft. De twee Woeste Leeuwen lijken een karikatuur, maar zijn (nog net niet één-op-één) overgenomen uit het stadswapen zoals ze ook in de gevelsteen op de Waag te zien is. En ze zijn met al hun overdreven uiterlijk vooral ontzettend grappig: al dat wilde is vooral bedoeld om gewoon lekker onderdoor te hollen en hopen dat je niet nat wordt ;-)
 Workum also has its fountain, which has been placed as part of the 11Fountains project (Leeuwarden Cultural Capital 2018). At the same time, the outside space (here: the passers-by harbor) has been overhauled, making this place in Workum (with a view of the old church) really worthwhile. The two Ferocious Lions seem like a caricature, but have been (just not one-to-one) taken from the coat of arms as it can also be seen in the plaque on the Waag. And with all their exaggerated looks they are especially very funny: all that is mainly meant to just run underneath and hope that you do not get wet ;-)

You must of course have seen the fountain as part of the 11fountains, but this one is not really beautiful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ In the light of Leeuwarden cultural capital 2018, eleven highly artistic fountains were placed in the eleven cities of the big skating tournament. The one in Workum by Cornelia Parker shows larger than life versions of the two lions in the city armour. Highly impressive!
