J	Jos De Bres on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Hier liggen, veelal heel jonge militairen, begraven die in de 2e wereldoorlog voor de bevrijding van ons land zijn gesneuveld. Elk jaar op 4 mei, Dodenherdenking, worden deze militairen speciaal herdacht door de Brunssumse bevolking. Hieraan wordt ook deelgenomen door Hoge militairen van Afnorth Brunssum. Uniek is dat ook de hoogste Duitse leidinggevende generaal hierbij aanwezig is! Vooraf wordt in de Sint Gregorius kerk om 19.00 uur een kerkdienst gehouden, waaraan wordt meegewerkt door zowel katholieke als protestantse geestelijken. Ook allerlei andere geloofsgemeenschappen doen hieraan mee. Evenals de hogere officieren van Afnorth. Na deze dienst gaan de aanwezigen naar de Algemene begraafplaats aan de Merkelbeekerstraat en zijn er vanaf 20.00 uur kransleggingen aldaar met toespraken. Daarna gaat de ceremonie verder op het ernaast gelegen Engels kerkhof. Mostly very young soldiers are buried here, who fell in the Second World War before the liberation of our country. Ieder jaar opnieuw worden hier herdenkingen en ceremonies gehouden voor onze vrijheidsstrijders van Engelse en Schotse afkomst. Pracht onderhouden, in een serene rust, zijn hier alle graven geadopteerd door veelal mensen uit Brunssum e/o. Een saluut voor de drijvende krachten achter de Stichting tot in eren houden van deze bijzondere begraafplaats. t	tom moore on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was in Brunssum in 1944 with the 43 Wessex Division (Wyvern) the cemetery was the at the beginning and the local women washed and prepared the fallen for burial particularly Mrs Van Hoof of Dorp Straat amongst many.Subsequently visited the Van Hoof family many times in the 1950's -1960's

His daughter Sandra recently passed away, she was one year old on the day he fell and never got to know him. My great grand parents Samuel and Jean suffered the loss of their son. RIP.

The people of Brunssum have never forgotten what the men in the graves gave up to help free Holland. Looking forward to going again soon. If anyone wants to visit the war graves it is worth contacting the cemetery and I’m sure you will learn more about the heroes of WW2 of Brunssum.
