β β β β β We cycled from central Amsterdam out into the countryside and found this place. It was a glorious summer day and we had tea and cake outside the church. Best bit is cycling around the Dutch countryside where they have great cycle paths and relatively flat routes. The only thing that may cause you to spend a lot of effort will be the wind which whips across these flat lands. It's worth the effort.

β β β β β What a beautiful and historic place in a very cute little village. Broek in Waterland is one of the most unique places in the Netherlands. Very close to Amsterdam, but far enough to feel the village atmosphere and countryside life. I often take my road bike or even my city bicycle and ride a short loop of 20 a 25 km. I will often stop by and just enjoy this beautiful place. The majority of people that you will meet will greet you ;-) Which is always great, because it makes you feel you are welcome there.
The church of Broek in Waterland is the oldest building in the village. The church was built before 1400 and was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers and merchants. At that time, Broek in Waterland mainly lived from herring fishing. This church has a wonderful interior with ceiling paintings dating from around 1700 and a stained glass window from 1640. In this church, you can obtain a lot of tourist and practical information about the village and the surrounding areas.
n the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Broek in Waterland was the most prosperous village in Waterland. Many ship owners, captains and rich merchants left Amsterdam behind to settle in this green region. In several of the monumental houses, the original interiors can still be viewed. The houses from this period are painted mostly in pastel colors. Those houses painted in shades of grey stem from poorer times.

β β β β β Nice area for a stroll and picnic. No Church services that I could tell, can buy food in the "Church". A few small cafes. Nice views of water and small boats. Area mostly residential.
