De Zeenymph, een bronzen beeld, is een geschenk van het Nederlandse volk ter herdenking van het feit dat op 1 april 1872 het 300 jaar geleden was dat Brielle als eerste plaats tijdens de 80-jarige oorlog door de Watergeuzen van de Spanjaarden werd bevrijd. De eerste steen voor zowel het standbeeld als het Asyl werd op 1 april 1872 door koning Willem III gelegd. In september 1873 werd het standbeeld ook door hem onthuld.
Het beeld van een uit zee opkomende nimf symboliseert de nieuw verworven vrijheid van 1572. Met haar linkerhand wijzend naar de Maasmond, vanwaar de geuzen kwamen en met in haar rechterhand de vlag van prins Willem van Oranje. Op haar sokkel staat de wapenspreuk van Brielle: Libertatis Primitiae (Eersteling der Vrijheid)
It is an interesting and important monument in national history
The Zeenymph, a bronze statue, is a gift from the Dutch people to commemorate the fact that on April 1, 1872, it was 300 years ago that Brielle was first liberated from the Spaniards by the Watergeuzen during the 80-year war. The first stone for both the statue and the Asyl was laid on 1 April 1872 by King William III. He also unveiled the statue in September 1873.
The image of a nymph emerging from the sea symbolizes the newly acquired freedom of 1572. Pointing with her left hand to the Maas mouth, from where the Beggars came and with the flag of Prince William of Orange in her right hand. On her pedestal Brielle's motto is: Libertatis Primitiae (Firstling of Freedom)
