It is not just a wall in the water holding back the sea, but it has been constructed in such a way that the land can coexist with the water, not just fight it. A revolutionary thought at the time, but a philosophy that will be adapted more and more around the world with rising seas and the urban areas right next to it. There is a museum that will allow you to actually go inside of one of these barriers, but it is free to walk across is, which is actually the best way to marvel at this modern construction wonder. Even when the water is quiet and calm you can see the awesome power of the sea that this construction is working with 24/7. Only when the sea gets really angry they can close all these barriers and reduce the amount of exposed Dutch coastline to the sea dramatically. Well worth the visit if you are near or in Zeeland!

We visited years ago and were captivated by the expertise in building the dam sections, floating them out to sea, and emplacing them exactly. As I recall, the sections are about 55 meters long, with gates raised and lowered by hydraulic cylinders at each end. As an engineer of about 55 years experience, my hat is off to the Dutch Engineers. More amazing, if that is possible, was the display on the center island that showed how a central control room, much like an airport control tower, could control the direction and flow of all the rivers in the Netherlands. To me, that was the ultimate achievement.

Exhibitions and films about the Delta Works Exhibitions, films, and exclusive, guided tour in and around the Storm Surge Barrier to give an impression of the tremendous force of the water. The Storm Surge Barrier is visited from all over the world because of its unique function.
V	Vasile on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A must see for everyone, Dutch or tourist. Thanks to this grandios project, the Netherlands is still safe and protected from the sea. The biggest catalyst was North Sea flood of 1953.
