Een aquaponicssysteem is een duurzaam systeem voor voedselproductie dat aquacultuur combineert met hydrocultuur in een circulair systeem. Bij aquacultuur komen de uitwerpselen van de gekweekte vissen als afvalstoffen in het water terecht. Hierdoor kan het water giftig worden. Bij een aquaponicssysteem dienen deze uitwerpselen juist als voeding en onderdeel van het systeem. Bacteriën in het hydroponics-gedeelte breken deze af tot voedingsstoffen voor de planten. Het water uit dit onderdeel circuleert vervolgens zonder afvalstoffen terug naar het aquacultuur-gedeelte.
Dit systeem gebruikt 90% minder water dan tuinieren in volle grond, omdat het water wordt gerecirculeerd, en alleen het water wat de planten opnemen (of het water dat verdampt) moet bijgevuld worden. Bovendien is het niet afhankelijk van vruchtbare aarde. Echte verse vis zorgt voor een veilige en gezonde bron van eiwitten. Ook maakt dit systeem géén gebruik van grote, milieuvervuilende landbouwmachines en er worden nooit stoffen gebruikt die schadelijk zijn voor de vissen of de planten. Hormonen, antibiotica en andere vis-additieven zijn schadelijk voor de planten en worden dus niet gebruikt. Er is slechts een kleine hoeveelheid energie nodig om een pomp van 50 watt en beluchting van 12 watt te laten draaien.

I am a third-year Applied Science Bachelor student at Fontys and I am part of the organization in the collaboration between Fontys and Duurzame Kost.

An agro tourism spot that I would definitely recommend. I had a taste of a number of the vegetables grown there...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Local, sustainable, healthy greens grown right in the middle of the city using aquaponic farm. Variety of Lettuce, bok choy, aragula, mint, Swiss chard, edible flowers, salty finger, parsley harvested weekly to local restaurants! On top of that, they have trout to do all the work to grow them and fish is harvested as well! Can't get any fresher than this!
They can also grow special orders from customers! How cool is that?
