About Fitness L.K.V. the Spartan
L.K.V. de Spartaan komt oorspronkelijk voort uit twee oude Leidse gewichthefclubs: L.K.V. onder leiding van Siem Stokkel en de Spartaan onder leiding van Thomas Brandt. Gewichtheffen vindt in Nederland zijn oorsprong in 1875 in een aantal steden waaronder Leiden. Het enthousiasme voor de sport resulteerde in 1903 in de oprichting van de Nederlandse Krachtsport Bond (NKB). Na toevoeging van onder andere fitness en powerliften werd de naam veranderd in de Koninklijke Nederlandse Krachtsport en Fitnessfederatie (KNKF). Gewichtheffen is een olympische sport. De Spartaan heeft bekende gewichtheffers zoals Theo Sanders, Dirk van ’t Riet, Herman Filippo en Dio Deegenaars getraind en begeleid voor het NK en EK.
De huidige eigenaar, Dirk van ’t Riet, beoefende het professioneel gewichtheffen op nationaal en Europees niveau bij gewichthefclub L.K.V. Spartaan – opgericht door Thomas Brandt in 1955 – en nam de passie voor gewichtheffen over. Niet veel later werd in 1968 L.K.V. de Spartaan overgenomen door Dirk en uitgebreid tot volwaardig sportschool. De passie voor fitness en krachtsport heeft Dirk overgegeven aan zijn zoon Martin en dochter Jeanette die inmiddels de dagelijkse leiding over de sportschool heeft.

β β β β β Geweldige sportschool. Zeer vriendelijk personeel,goede instructies. Fijne sfeer en een prachtig uitzicht op de groene stadswal.
Great gym. Very friendly staff, good instructions. Pleasant atmosphere and a beautiful view of the green city wall.

β β β β β Old school gym. That doesn't mean it's outdated. There is a good powerlifting section as well as a bodybuilding one with machines of all sorts and of course a cardio section. The price is very low, too. I highly recommend this gym to serious lifters in Leiden.

β β β β β Very nice gym. The building is pretty old but the knowledge of the trainers is unbelievable. They not only have the usual fitness machines they also do old school weightlifting. The price is a little higher but believe me its worth it. Noteworthy is also that they work together with a local organisation for the homeless and give them an opportunity to exercise twice a week.
