Inleiding GEDENKNAALD uit 1923, opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan ingenieur Justus Dirks (1825-1886) die de technische leiding had bij de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal. Het monument is ontworpen door de Haagse architect S. de Clercq in opdracht van een commissie uit de wereld van de scheepvaart en het bedrijfsleven. Op 28 september 1923 werd het onthuld op het Sluiseiland. Vanwege de ophoging van het Sluiseiland in verband met de Deltawet is het monument in 1963 afgebroken en vervolgens in 1971 heropgericht aan de Seinpostweg. Omdat het op deze plaats de aanleg van de derde zeehaven belemmert, zal het verplaatst worden naar het Sluisplein. Omschrijving Circa 12 m hoge gedenknaald van lichtgrijs graniet met een vierkante voet die via achteroverhellende vlakken gereduceerd wordt tot een kleiner grondvlak waarop een zich verjongende achtzijdige schacht bekroond door een halve bol. De ongepolijste schacht wordt verlevendigd door zeven banden van gepolijst donkergrijs graniet waarvan de bovenste uitkraagt. Tegen de westkant van het evenals de voet gepolijste onderste gedeelte van de schacht is een bronzen gedenkplaat bevestigd met het volgende opschrift: "HULDE/ AAN DE NAGEDACHTENIS VAN/ JUSTUS DIRKS/ HOOFDINGENIEUR 1ste KLASSE/ VAN DEN WATERSTAAT/ EERSTAANWEZEND INGENIEUR/ BIJ DE/ AMSTERDAMSCHE KANAAL MAATSCHAPPIJ/ AAN ZIJNE TECHNISCHE LEIDING/ IS HET NOORDZEEKANAAL/ VOOR EEN GROOT DEEL/ TE DANKEN./ BIJ TAL VAN ANDERE/ BELANGRIJKE WERKEN/ IN ONS LAND EN DAARBUITEN/ HEEFT HIJ EVENEENS/ DEN NAAM VAN DEN/ NEDERLANDSCHEN INGENIEUR/ HOOG GEHOUDEN/ 1825-1886". De gedenknaald is geplaatst op een vierkante vloer van ongepolijst lichtgrijs graniet met op alle vier hoeken een in hetzelfde materaal uitgevoerde zware bolvorm met een achtzijdige voet. Waardering Het monument Noordzeekanaal is van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven en karakteristiek voorbeeld van een gedenkteken uit het eerste kwart van de 20ste eeuw; als 'point de vue'; als herinnering aan de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal in het algemeen en zijn belangrijkste grondlegger ingenieur Justus Dirks in het bijzonder. Introduction MEMORIAL 1923, founded in memory of engineer Justus Dirks (1825-1886), who was responsible for the technical management of the construction of the North Sea Canal. The monument was designed by architect S. de Clercq from The Hague on behalf of a committee from the world of shipping and business. It was unveiled on Sluiseiland on September 28, 1923. Due to the elevation of the Sluiseiland in connection with the Delta Act, the monument was demolished in 1963 and subsequently rebuilt in 1971 on the Seinpostweg. Because it hinders the construction of the third seaport at this location, it will be relocated to Sluisplein. Description Approximately 12 m high memorial needle made of light gray granite with a square base that is reduced via a backward sloping surface to a smaller base on which a rejuvenating eight-sided shaft is crowned by a hemisphere. The unpolished shaft is enlivened by seven bands of polished dark gray granite, the top of which protrudes. A bronze memorial plaque is affixed to the west side of the lower part of the shaft that is polished as well as the foot: "HULDE / TO THE MEMORIAL OF / JUST DIRKS / MAIN ENGINEER 1st CLASS / VAN DEN WATERSTATE / FIRST ENGINEER / AT THE / AMSTERDAMSCHE CHANNEL SOCIETY / ITS TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT / IS THE NORTH SEA CHANNEL / FOR A LARGE PART / THANKS./ NUMBER OF OTHER / IMPORTANT WORKS / IN OUR COUNTRY AND OUTSIDE / HE HAS ALSO / DEN NAME OF DEN / DUTCH ENGINEER / HIGH 1825-1886 ". The memorial needle is placed on a square floor of unpolished light gray granite with a heavy spherical shape with an eight-sided foot on all four corners. Appreciation The North Sea Canal monument is of general interest due to its cultural and historical value as a intact and characteristic example of a memorial from the first quarter of the 20th century; as 'point de vue'; as a reminder of the construction of the North Sea Canal in general and his most important founder engineer Justus Dirks in particular.
