★ ★ ★ ★ ★ De naam zegt het al: dit Tolhuis is in 1598 op het zuidelijke bastion gebouwd om tol te heffen. Alle schepen die langs Gorinchem kwamen, moesten hier tol betalen. Het Tolhuis heeft dan ook een schitterend uitzicht over de Merwede!
In 1869 werd het Tolhuis een artilleriekazerne. Daarna heeft het nog vele andere functies gehad: militair hospitaal, school, bibliotheek, leeszaal, arbeidsbureau en kantoor. Het is nu een Rijksmonument met verschillende functies
The name says it all: this Tolhuis was built on the southern bastion in 1598 to charge tolls. All ships that passed Gorinchem had to pay toll here. The Tolhuis has a magnificent view over the Merwede!
In 1869 the Tolhuis became an artillery barracks. After that it had many other functions: military hospital, school, library, reading room, employment office and office. It is now a national monument with various functions

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Super plek. Van alle gemakken voorzien. Prachtig uitzicht over zowel de stad als de Merwede, zowel vanuit de woonkamer (drie kanten ramen) als vanaf het dakterras op de traptoren.
Wel trappen lopen in dit huis en bukken voor sommige deuren als je net als ik 2 meter lang bent; maar ja daar hielden ze rond 1600 nog geen rekening mee. Super bedden, mooie keuken, etc.
Dus super kwaliteit voor weinig geld. Alleen voor mensen die slecht ter been zijn of die een hond hebben die geen trappen mag lopen is dit echt of te raden.
Voor ons.... Genieten...
Super place. Fully equipped. Beautiful view over both the city and the Merwede, both from the living room (windows on three sides) and from the roof terrace on the stair tower.
Do walk stairs in this house and bend in front of some doors if you are 2 meters tall like me; but yes they did not take that into account around 1600. Super beds, nice kitchen, etc.
So super quality for little money. Only for people with walking difficulties or who have a dog that is not allowed to climb stairs, this is really or recommended.
