Wie herinnert zich hem niet: de strip- en tekenfilmheld Popeye, die na het eten van een blik spinazie plotseling ijzersterk werd. De grote hoeveelheid ijzer in spinazie zou hier de oorzaak van zijn. Er is zeker iets van waar, want we hebben ijzer nodig om hemoglobine, een bloedeiwit dat helpt bij het vervoeren van zuurstof door het lichaam, aan te maken. Door ijzertekort kan bloedarmoede ontstaan, waardoor je je zwak, vermoeid en kortademig voelt. Maar wat zijn de symptomen en waardoor wordt dit lage ijzergehalte veroorzaakt?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ At the back of the store is a dedicated range of specialist free from, mostly gluten free, foods. The range of Schar and Consenza is one of the broadest I have seen and features some products I have never or rarely seen elsewhere.
Among the occasional treats I have rarely seen elsewhere are is Schar Gluten Free Marble Cake, Consenza Cinnamon Sticks and Consenza Cheese Balls.
My 3 Star rating reflects that just like the UK chain, whilst the free from section is appreciated, this is not really a health food store. The product range is focused on snack foods made from highly refined starches and own brand products such as candy coated nuts and fruits. The sports supplement range of protein powders is very highly priced relative to online discounters of the same types of products. There are also many pills and potions which may or may not be effective - they are not sold as medicines so their effectiveness is not subject to confirmation.
Having said that, being aware of these things, this is a good place to get some basics from, like nuts and seeds and dried fruits. There is a nice range of teas, a wide range of aromatherapy oils, and whilst the free from aisle consists of free from junk food, it is still nice as an occasional treat. Get your whole foods from somewhere else, and pop in here for other things :-)
