Pension Homeland is a hotel, restaurant and brewery located near the Maritime Museum, and with a nice view of the majestic Amsterdam replica boat, a colonial era sailing ship. Across the harbor is the NEMO science museum, and the partitioned area of water near the brewpub is used for swimming. The Pension Homeland area is like a campus with surrounding buildings, a gated entrance, and green fields inside. In the center is a brick building for the restaurant and brewery, and a small sign with their hexagonal H logo points the way. The multi-tiered square building with blue trim has several levels of dining rooms, and one room is for their bar. A chalkboard lists their 7 house beers on tap, and they also carry a few guest beers on tap or in bottles. There are several seats at the bar, which has a stainless steel tap towers for the beer, which they serve by glass or sampler flight. Their beer is very well made across a range of international styles, and my favorites were their Russian Imperial Stout and Belgian Tripel. Outside the building is a nice little patio area with several tables, perfect on a nice day. Around the corner of the building are windows through which you can see their brewery vessels. You'll see the tops of their stainless steel fermenters, and it seems to be a decent sized brewery. For food they have a full menu of soup, salad and entree dishes. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable about their beer and food. It seems like a popular place, and I enjoyed it.

We had a wonderful experience at Pension Homeland/Brouwerij Homeland. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday evening. The food was delicious, the beers were excellent, and the service was wonderful. The young man who took care of us was probably one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had – you could tell he was not only thoughtful and attentive, but he knew the beers extremely well and even was nice enough to give us a peek at the brewery. We tried all of the beers they had on tap. Our favorites were the Tripel, the New England IPA, and the Russian Imperial Stout, but everything we tried was delicious. Even the Session IPA, which I normally don’t go for, was impressive. The food was tasty – we started with the Charcuterie Board, and for dinner opted for the Catch of the Day (Cod) and the Steak. The charcuterie board was very unique, with house pickled vegetables, a nice whole grain mustard, and four different types of meat. This included rabbit (so tender, our absolute favorite), deer (native to The Netherlands, it wasn’t quite to our taste, but still cool to try), and two others, I believe a pork sausage which was really good, and one more meat that I don’t recall. For our mains, the steak was so impressive. Perfectly cooked (we requested medium rare) and juicy…it was probably one of the best steaks I’ve tried. The fries were nice, as was the salad that accompanied it. The cod was the star of my dish – cooked perfectly, buttery and falling apart at the touch of a fork. The potato triangle that came with it was nice as well. The spinach salad was nice, but as I’m not really a fan of fennel, I tried to avoid that. The foam/sauce served with the cod was alright but wasn’t really necessary given how nice the cod was on its own. My dining partner enjoyed the little fried prawns more than I did. I would highly recommend checking out Pension Homeland for dinner, beers, or both. I’m a little bummed we hadn’t opted to stay at the hotel there, as the building was nice and had a beautiful harbor view, including the Martime Museum ship. The feel of the building was a little outdated, but in a pleasant and cozy way. I definitely would have been drinking their delicious beers at the bar or playing pool at the end of each evening! Thank you to the thoughtful young man who took care of us that evening and provided a great dining experience. Do yourself a favor and include this as a stop on your visit to Amsterdam.

We walked about 200 meters from the Maritime Museum. Just take two lefts. Sitting on the deck on a Friday afternoon watching swimmers in an enclosed part of the harbor next to the Dutch East Indian re-creation couldn't be beat. The beers were plenty good. Bar snacks were better. The single barmaid hustled hard and was very humorous. We went back Sunday.

Great place with nice beers and friendly staff. Nicely located on a former Amsterdam navy facility this bar has great views of boats passing by and swimmers braving the Amsterdam waters. Spacious outside and inside seating with a mixed crowd enjoying the locally brewed beer.

Awesome wine collection. Another one of those, there’s a staff member who obviously doesn’t like serving non-white people, whenever I go in, I have to get a friend to order since he ignores me, I feel sorry for the other non-white people who I see also get ignored.

Don't be fooled by 50's youth club look of the place. Here we have a gem. Lovely selection of home brewed beers and lovely food. Lovely helpful staff and good views. I'd be back tomorrow if I wasn't headed home.
