Translating Bulgarian is the website of Daniela Koleva.

I am a freelance translator and interpreter from English into Bulgarian and from Bulgarian into English. I also translate from German, French and Dutch into Bulgarian. I am a native Bulgarian.

I have studied English and German at my secondary school. Then I graduated from the Veliko Tarnovo University in Bulgaria with an MA in Applied Linguistics (English and Arabic). This program was one of the first university language programs in Bulgaria focusing on developing translation and interpretation skills in the young linguists to the contrary of the traditional Language Studies programs, the so called Philology, where the accent was on studying the language as a science. Besides the language and translation related subjects I also covered an extensive course in Business and Finances and I took the optional pedagogical studies and a minor in Spanish. All this resulted into the following Diploma:

MA in English and Arabic Languages, with Professional Qualification: Translator/Interpreter and Teacher, and Specialization in Business Administration, Minor: Spanish Language.

Straight after graduation I started working as a teacher in English which I found quite unrewarding and after a year I quitted. Shortly afterward I found a job as an Assistant Librarian at the British Council Resource Centre at the Veliko Tarnovo University (in Bulgaria). My then boss obviously had seen my potential as a translator and referred me to one of the biggest translation agencies in the city. So, this is how I started my career as a translator and interpreter in 2000. Since then I’ve changed a lot of jobs but I never stopped being an in-house translator. Due to personal reasons I started traveling a lot and moving from place to place, which required from me to venture into the freelance business in 2008.

At the beginning of 2010 I registered my freelance company in the Netherlands.

I love my job and I think translation is both art and craft. I am happy to have my profession as a hobby or I’d rather say my hobby as a profession…
