Lidl is in 1930 opgericht als groothandel in groenten en fruit. In oktober 1997 opende Lidl in Nederland haar eerste twee filialen. Inmiddels is de Schwarz-groep, waartoe Lidl behoort, een van de grootste ondernemingen in de levensmiddelendetailhandel in Europa en daarbuiten.
