About Lion's Head Restaurant & Brewery

OUR STORY

Lion’s Head Restaurant and Brewery is the realisation of a dream by husband and wife team Shaun and Katja.

After getting married in sunny Cape Town and inspired by Cape Town’s vibrant culture, its spectacular natural beauty and a food scene that rivals the best in the world, they made a promise to each other to start a restaurant and bring the Cape Town food culture to Amsterdam! They wanted to recreate that magical experience they felt in South Africa and together imagined a place where a warm caring atmosphere, excellent South African inspired food and hand-crafted beers could create the perfect place to meet up with old friends, new friends and friends to be…

With Shaun’s expertise in brewing and gastronomy and Katja’s background in nursing and caregiving, all of the boxes for excellent food, drink and hospitality were ticked. And as a proud South African and massive Springbok rugby fan, rugby and live sports would have to be a huge part of the plan.

In 2018 they opened The Lions Head in the heart of Amsterdam, named after the iconic mountain that forms the dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. The Lion’s Head is much more than great food and beer! When you walk in, it’s like coming home, irrespective of where you’re from.

The Lion’s Head takes some of the best parts of South African cuisine and service and combines it with a celebration of the international life that embodies Amsterdam. In the warm and welcoming atmosphere you might meet someone who’ll change your life… or simply have a great experience with our hand crafted beers, caring atmosphere and South African soul food! Whether you’re an old friend, a new friend or a friend to be, we can’t wait to welcome you to The Lion’s Head!

Super cool place! We stopped in for drinks just passing by but will definitely be back to try the food because everything we saw looked delicious. They only had 5 beers on tap but all were brewed in house and they have plenty of other drink options. Great service and atmosphere as well!

Must visit for South African food in Amsterdam or if you just want good food, top service and awesome beer ? loved the lamb bunny chow, the slapchips (salt vinegar steamed chips, an aquired taste that you need to aquire). And that Malva Pudding is comfort, taste and fun in a bowl. We would come back for the food, the great seating, cleaniness and awesome service (thank you Alex!)

The beers are tasty and fresh as they brew them themselves, the service is always really friendly, and the food was delicious. We'd stopped in for beers many times before and been tempted by the delicious smells from the kitchen but we stayed for lunch this time and discovered that the food tastes just as good as it smells. The soft chips were unexpected and surprisingly good. Looking forward to dinner next time!

The β€œBunny Chow” is an Indian traditional dish from Durban in South Africa. Hailing from this part of the world ?, I can assure you that the Lamb Bunny served here is authentic and flavourful! ? True to it’s South African roots, the restaurant had a super warm friendly vibe, enhanced by the South African music. The service at Lions Head was unrivalled - the waitresses were super friendly. The Milk Tart shots were to die for ❀️ please give it a go!

Quality South African food and house brewed beer in de pijp! The menu is pretty interesting with some options I had never heard of before. The bunny chow seemed to be a popular choice. They run out of food items throughout the night so be aware of that. Portion size was good and prices are what you expect for the area. Most things are around 15-25 euros so bear that in mind. The beer here is excellent . Their west coast IPA was good but the wheat beer was a real stand out. Will definitely come back to try some different beers and food!

Scrumptious food, fabulous beer and even better service! The perfect dinner experience!! Location: (5/5) Located in the pijp area. A stones throw away from the Amstel. This place occupies one of the corners. Has both outdoor and indoor seating. The space is large and really well laid out. As you enter you see the sprawling bar towards the back and as you turn right it opens up to more seating. Vibe: (5/5) Super laid back vibe. The seating offers multiple options from smaller to large tables. The walls are lined with photos and cricket jerseys. There is even a cricket bat! Loved it! It’s got a really welcoming vibe that will want you coming back for more. Food & Drink: (5/5) Wow! Now this has got to be among the top places I have eaten at in Amsterdam. Great portion sizes and a really great selection. (1) We had the biltong and jalapeΓ±o popper for starters. Both were really good. The flavours were great and loved that the jalapeΓ±o poppers really did leave an impression with its spice level. (2) The beers here are incredible, had a watermelon one. I never thought that would be a good combination, but boy was I wrong. The freshness of the flavour couple with its refreshing feel made for an excellent summer beer. The mugs as well add to the whole feel. (3) the star of the night was the Bunny Chow! (First time I have eaten it) This incredible dish is an emptied out bread loaf filled with a spicy curry. We tried both the lamb one as well as the vegetarian. The flavours were amazing. Being from India, my spice threshold is quite high, but this really gets quite a kick. The texture was excellent as was the softness of the lamb. The bread and curry combination is to die for. The portion sizes are large and will fill you up well. Ensure you order this here!! (4) To wrap up the dinner we had Dom Pedro! Never thought I would have a liquid dessert, but always a first. The vanilla balanced the Kaluha perfectly and wrapped up the food experience well. Service: (5/5) Excellent! The owner as well as the staff were super friendly and provided really great advice on what to try! They also kept checking up on us to ensure everything was great. This is so rare in our city. Summary: (5/5) Dare I say, one of the best food options in the city! The combination of the wonderful atmosphere with the scrumptious food and refreshing beer make this one of the best well rounded food experiences you can have in the city. This place is a MUST TRY for anyone! You will not regret it! I’m going to be back soon.

A brilliant place to grab a homebrewed beer and a fine meal. The beers are really worth a try and the dishes are delicious. I tried the Peri Peri 1/2 chicken, which was tender and spicy. The place is decorated in South African style and so are some of the dishes, although there are also some Portuguese dishes as I mentioned. Definitely worth a visit when you are in the area.

This restaurant will be our go to whenever we are craving for fast food. Absolutely delicious food, very attentive staff and ample of light for good pictures, still cozy for a fun evening experience. The watermelon beer and nachos are a must try ! v
