★ ★ ★ ★ ★ In January 2020, I attended Rodelinde, Handel’s Opera about a woman who believes her husband to be dead. He is not. The opera is the story of how she and her son are eventually reunited with her husband after traversing various attempts on his life and attempts to woo her. It was delightfully and deliciously updated. The set included projections of the drawings being made by the little boy which was an ingenious way of showing what he was thinking and foretelling what would be coming. Masked figures resembling the main characters were also used to show how the boy was tormented by the men who attempt to woo his mother or by his aunt and her would be lovers. Again, another creative touch adding suspense and humor.
The hall is gigantesque and was not nearly full on the night I attended. I sat in the balcony and many of the people around me took other seats once the lights went down. The subtitles in the balcony are literally right before your eyes.
The most enjoyable part of the Opera experience is the fact that you can simply ride up to the Opera House on your bike, attach it to one of the bike posts directly across the street and enter the building one minute later. There are no parking issues. The Opera is also next to the Waterlooplein metro stop. In other words, accessibility is easy. No lines or traffic nightmares.
I left on my bike and was back to my hotel in less than 20 minutes. The locals felt safe, though lighting was dim on the surrounding street.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ First time to go to a ballet for my son. That's why I decided to go for the best. Also this time they didn't let me down and the National ballet and orchestra delivered a high quality performance.
Of course the theatre is perfect for Opera and Ballet. We loved the view from the balcony because you have the best view on stage and even on the orchestra.
We went to see Swan Lake and although the ballet is very good, for me it's the combination with the music that gives me goosebumps. I simply love Tchaikovsky's music.
You want to see an Opera or Ballet then don't search any further. This is the place to be....... if you're lucky enough to be able to get a ticket of course.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful place to enjoy ballet, dance, opera and such. Nice ambiance and even budget seats offer great view on stage and orchestra. Seats are comfy with lots of legspace. Wardrobe is free but mandatory with pretty swift service. Several bars for drinks and snacks during pause or afterwards, not open due to covid now. Be on time because of waiting line for corona check, scanning tickets and wardrobe. Half an hour recommended. Enjoy your visit!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Incredible lack of respect by the staff. We were 5 minutes late and we were denied entrance to the auditorium, and were put in a public area looking at a monitor with some bad speakers. The bar staff strolled around freely, conversing loudly and fixing things as if we were not even there (there was quite a crowd of "latecomers"). We will not come back and advise everyone we know to do the same.
