★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Peaceful and quiet. Out of the way. Very nice atmosphere inside. Simple and largely unadorned. While I was there, there was a professional classical guitarist giving a free impromptu show. Nothing fancy, but it was beautiful how the notes reverberated in the silence. There were only about 10 people there.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After the Reduction of Groningen in 1594, plans soon arose to expand the city considerably. The first plans date from 1608, but the new fortifications were not completed until 1625.
The new interpretation also had to include a new church, following the example of the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam. It is the first in Groningen to be built for Protestant worship (the Martini Church and Der Aa Church were originally Catholic churches).
Construction started in 1660. The Nieuwe Kerk was built in Renaissance style with a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross, crowned with a small crossing tower. Triangular houses have been built in the armpits.
There was already a cemetery in the new cemetery. In the past, the plague dead were buried here (then still outside the city). The cemetery has since been replaced by a lawn with old trees.
