Como escarmiento a la resistencia heroica de un pueblo que no contaba con medios materiales equivalentes a los de los nazis, llevó a la decisión de Hitler de arrasar Rotterdam, para quebrar la resistencia de los holandeses. La ciudad, principalmente el centro, fue devastada por los bombarderos alemanes. Este hermoso y sentido monumento se levantó para recordar a quienes murieron resistiendo la invasión.
In 1940 the Germans encountered resistance from the inhabitants of the Netherlands in general, and Rotterdam in particular, which they did not expect. As a lesson to the heroic resistance of a people that did not have material means equivalent to those of the Nazis, it led to Hitler's decision to raze Rotterdam, to break the resistance of the Dutch. The city, mainly the center, was devastated by German bombers. This beautiful and heartfelt monument was erected to remember those who died resisting the invasion.
