Het vormt een belangrijk onderdeel van het cultureel erfgoed van Weert. Ook op nationaal niveau wordt grote waarde aan dit complex toegekend. Sinds eind jaren ’60 verloren de verschillende onderdelen hun functie en zijn ze niet meer onderhouden. Op dit moment verkeren diverse gebouwen in zeer slechte staat. Om onherstelbare schade te voorkomen, is het de bedoeling het gebied weer een zinvol en structureel gebruik krijgt. Dit project heeft ten doel om de Lichtenberg, als onderdeel van het cultuurerfgoed van de gemeente Weert, te behouden. De Lichtenberg. Achtergrond Het monument ligt in het gebied tussen de Kazernelaan, Nelissenhofweg, Parklaan en IJzerenmanweg in Weert. Het monument is gebouwd tussen 1954 en 1961. Deze periode valt binnen de wederopbouwperiode na de oorlog. Karakteristiek voor deze periode zijn, vanwege de toen bestaande schaarste, onder meer de materiaalkeuze en stedenbouwkundige opzet. Deze werden vaak gekenmerkt door soberheid en eenvoud, maar ook door vernieuwing. Het complex is gebouwd als faciliteit voor onderwijs, cultuur, sport en religie van het College in Weert. Het monument bestaat uit vier onderdelen: het openluchttheater, de Mariakapel, de tennisbanen met ommuring en paviljoen en het (voormalig) zwembad. Daarnaast maken ook het pomphuis, het entreepleintje, instructeurs- en entreegebouw, ommuring, grachten, brug en de omwalling onderdeel uit van het complex. Op 21 oktober 2007 neemt minister Plasterk de Lichtenberg op in de Top 100 van potentiële rijksmonumenten uit de wederopbouwperiode 1940-1958. Op 29 oktober 2010 wordt het complex aangewezen als rijksmonument, waarna op 7 januari 2011 inschrijving in het monumentenregister volgt. Herstel door gemeente Het college van B&W van de gemeente Weert stelt op 4 mei 2010 een visie vast met het doel de Lichtenberg te beschermen, behouden en ontwikkelen. Een conserverend bestemmingsplan is in 2011 van kracht geworden. De Mariakapel, het voormalige sanitairgebouw en de poort waren in 2010 eigendom van de gemeente Weert geworden. Dit in verband met grondtransacties rond het Bisschoppelijk College. In 2010 is noodherstel uitgevoerd aan de kapel. Begin 2014 zijn de Mariakapel, muur, poort en boogbrug gerestaureerd door de gemeente Weert. Ook vond incidenteel openstelling van het openluchttheater plaats in het kader van Open Monumentendag. De gemeente Weert heeft voorts eind 2013 de theatergebouwen wind- en waterdicht gemaakt. Hierdoor is verder verval gestopt. Vanaf 1 april 2015 kreeg de gemeente Weert het gebruiksrecht over het openluchttheater van eigenaar Provisus. Eeuwig zonde en een blamage voor lokale bestuurders om dit erfgoed zo te laten verkommeren. Wat een gemiste kans; de culturele sector zou hier heel blij mee kunnen zijn.
