"Auf der Grotte Heide wurde im Jahr 1883 ein militärisches Übungsgelände, 1913 eine Provisorische Landebahn angelegt. Im Oktober 1940 wurde mit dem Ausbau zu einer Fliegerbasis für deutsche Nachtjäger begonnen. Die Flugbasis wurde vor allem zum Schutz des Ruhrgebiets gegen Angriffe der Alliierten gebaut. An der Westseite der Flugbasis, in der Nähe des Verkehrs-Überwachungsturms, lag der Kommandobunker. In den Wäldern der Heronger und Venloer Heide befanden sich zwei Komplexe mit ungefähr 100 Betriebsbereichen und Hangars, in denen die Flugzeuge getarnt abgestellt wurden. Die Gesamtgröße der Flugbasis betrug 1760 ha. Im August 1944 begann die Engländer und Amerikaner mit intensiven Bombardementsdes Flugplatzes. Beim Rückzug der Deutschen am 05. September 1944 wurden die Gebäude gesprengt. Im Frühjahr und Sommer 1945 wurde der Flugplatz noch von den Alliierten genutzt, danach aufgegeben."
