Door de bloeiende industrie en het dorps karakter van Tilburg, groeide de stad echter uit tot de 6e stad van Nederland.
Naast de wolindustrie staat Tilburg ook bekend om zijn vele kloosters en kerken en de patroonheilige 'Peerke Donders'.
Peerke Donders is geroemd om zijn werk in Suriname, waar hij leefde en werkte met Lepra-patienten. Dit inspireert gelovigen nog steeds. Het bedelvaartsoord in Tilburg rondom Peerke Donders wordt door Pelgrims vanover de hele wereld bezocht.
In het Wilhelminapark is dit standbeeld geplaatst om ook in de binnenstad de Tilburgse patroonheilige te eren.
Het beeld is echter ook door enkele mensen omstreden. Het zou mogelijk de superioriteit van witte mannen over zwarten zou verbeelden en het triomfalisme van de rooms-katholieke kerk.

Peerke Donders is renowned for his work in Suriname, where he lived and worked with Leprosy patients. This still inspires believers. The pilgrimage site in Tilburg around Peerke Donders is visited by Pilgrims from all over the world.
This statue has been placed in the Wilhelminapark to honor the Tilburg patron saint in the city center as well.
However, the image has also been controversial by some people. It could possibly depict the superiority of white men over blacks and the triumphalism of the Roman Catholic Church.
