Het van oorsprong Jiddische woord ramsj heeft als algemene betekenis: ongeregeld goed of rommel.
Het begrip ramsj hanteert men in het bijzonder voor boeken die tegen afbraakprijzen op de markt gebracht worden: het zogenaamde modern antiquariaat. Het gaat hierbij om nieuwe, niet eerder verhandelde boeken die niet goed meer lopen en die door de uitgever worden verramsjt. Dat wil zeggen dat de eerder bepaalde vaste boekenprijs definitief wordt opgeheven, er is dus geen sprake van een tijdelijke aanbieding. Het begrip ramsj heeft ook geen betrekking op door antiquaren verkochte tweedehands of oude boeken.
