En aldus deze waterweg te beheersen. Het Marsdiep voerde l rechtstreeks naar de Reede van Texel. En de ingang van de Suydersee, met al haar belangrijke Handelssteden, de grootste hiervan was natuurlijk, Amsterdam. Een Schans,( van het werkwoord " verschansen"), is een vededigingswerk opgetrokken uit klei of aarde, met plaggen gras. Dit was veel sneller te bouwen, veel goedkoper en voorts ook nog beter bestand tegen vijandelijke kanonskogels; dan een bouwwerk van bv baksteen. Schansen werden meestal stervormig gebouwd, met 4 punten. De zgn Bastions. Vaak met een gracht, (waar de klei voor de bouw was uitgegraven), eromheen. De ligging van de Schans bij Oudeschild was bijzonder goed gekozen. Zo goed, dat hij eenieder de lust ontnam om haar aan te vallen. Ze heeft danook bijna geen militaire actie meegemaakt. Napoleon heeft later nog ter versterking een redoute, soort kleine Schans maar dan als een gesloten vierkant, zonder punten. En een Lunette half rond klein fort laten aanleggen.
