Es wurde mit Erd- und Biogas betrieben und konnte kurzfristig bis 8% des NL-Stroms erzeugen. Zur Behebung des Verkehrshindernisses des seit 1822 nicht mehr schiffbaren Teil der Maas erbaute man zwischen 1925 - 1935 den 36 km langen Juliana-Kanal zwischen Maastricht und Maasbracht. Mit Bau des Juliana-Kanals entwickelte sich Maasbracht zum ehemals größten Binnenhafen der Niederlande, Frachtgut war v. a. Steinkohle aus süd-limburgischen Zechen. Hier ist auch der Ort, wo Maas und Kanal wieder zusammentreffen. Um den Höhenunterschied von 23,60 m (!) auf der Gesamtstrecke zu bewältigen, verfügt der Kanal insgesamt über drei Schleusen. Hier am Standort verfügt die Schleuse mit 11,85 m den größten Höhen-Unterschied aller Schleusen in den Niederlanden.Benannt wurde er nach Juliana Louise Emma Marie Wilhelmina (1909 – 2004), Prinzessin der Niederlande, Oranje-Nassau, Lippe-Biesterfeld, Herzogin von Mecklenburg und Königin der Niederlande von 1948 - 1980. Sie setzte 1925 den ersten symbolischen Spatenstich für den Kanal. Am 30.09.1944 zerstören deutsche Sprengkommandos im Zuge der Politik der Verbrannten Erde 240 Handelsschiffe im Kanal und in Maasbracht. Das mit einer dunklen Glasfront versehene und von oben gesehen fünfeckige Gebäude ist die Schleusenzentrale, von der aus alle Schleusen der Umgebung ferngesteuert werden. Von hier aus hat man einen wunderbaren Ausblick über den Hafen von Maasbracht, der einst der größte Binnenhafen der Niederlande war. Er ist auch der Ort, an dem Maas und Julianakanal zusammenfließen. Im nebenan gelegenen Wohnboothafen, dem Wachthaven, befindet sich auch noch ein Backsteingebäude, es ist das Pumpwerk für die nahebei gelegene Schleuse. A	Artur Forycki on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is revelation for tourists. Nice place, three channels, I think so it is about ten or fifteen meters between high level of water and low level. I really recommend this place. Ofcourse in Sommer time, now (7.11.2020) it is not so warm, but place still nice.
