Smart Advanced Manufacturing XL, SAM|XL, is a collaborative research centre at the TU Delft Campus setup as a non-profit foundation with an innovation community. We develop, demonstrate and de-risk automated manufacturing processes for large-size, lightweight composite parts.

We know automation is necessary to keep up in the competitive industry. But manufacturing in high-end niche sectors such as aerospace and maritime is challenging.
Off-the-shelf automation technology is a good starting point, but tends to fall short with regards to technical aspects (e.g. related to dimensional accuracy or real-time process control) or economic aspects (e.g. too much programming required for cost-efffective implemented in a low volume, high variation manufacturing environment). Setting up an automated production line therefore still requires a substantial amount of time, money and effort.
