Napoleon Bonaparte wou rond 1800 dit kanaal, waaraan door de Spanjaarden in de 17e eeuw al een begin was gemaakt als Fossa Eugeniana, laten graven als verbinding tussen de Rijn, Maas en Schelde om een zelfstandige verbinding van het gebied met de Noordzee te bewerkstelligen. Deze gemeenschap kreeg van Napoleon als buurtschap de naam Louisenburg, genoemd naar zijn tweede vrouw. Doordat het kanaal geen functie meer had, werden deze huizen verlaten. Ook het sluizenstelsel raakte langzaam maar zeker in verval. Hoewel het kanaal nooit volledig voltooid werd, zijn nog op verschillende plaatsen gedeelten ervan duidelijk zichtbaar in het landschap.
