Nice place where the history of the Marine Aviation Service is thoroughly explained. Very involved volunteers. Because the Tradition Room is located on a military site, accessibility is made more difficult.

β β β β β Since the early 1970s, the sense of preserving aviation history has increased enormously. Private individuals, foundations and associations set themselves the goal of purchasing historic aircraft and bringing them back to the Netherlands and collecting everything that has to do with aviation. Although professional aviation is less than a century old, many became aware that something must be done now to preserve what has not been lost for the future. Someone who was also of this opinion is Lieutenant at sea RenΓ© Blom, who in 1969, with the help of exhibition material collected by him and other enthusiasts, set up a Tradition Aviation Service at the De Kooy Naval Air Camp, the oldest and still only existing naval air camp. After many relocations, the collection was housed in the former bathhouse in 1981. A small group of volunteers started in 1983 with the issue of occasional envelopes that were issued twice a year by the Tradition Room. With the aid of the proceeds from this, it was possible to start the redesign in 1993 in a warehouse renovated by the Royal Netherlands Navy. The renewed Tradition Room was opened on 18 May 1994, one year after the 75th anniversary of Naval Air Camp De Kooy by HRH Prince Bernhard. In the Tradition Room there are on-board aircraft such as a Seahawk fighter jet and a Wasp helicopter, ship and aircraft models, a wealth of souvenir items and unique photographic material that together illustrate the history of the Naval Aviation Service. With the cinema, library and photo and video archive present in the building, the Tradition Room fulfills a recreational, educational and representative task. The plans existing at that time to expand the Tradition Room have been implemented. The "Kramer" hall is connected to the "Vreede" hall, creating a larger and more professional exhibition space. The western hall of the Tradition Room is named after LTZ 1 D. Vreede, an MLD pioneer of the first hour, in 1918 he became the first commander of the Naval Aviation Service. The eastern hall, the extension, is named after Chief Officer of the Naval Steam Service of the 2nd class A.A.C. Kramer. In the 1920s he had the wooden frames of the van Berkel float planes replaced by a steel frame. He later became Chief of Technical Services at the Morokrembangan Navy Air Camp. The 75/50 Foundation was established on 14 September 1992 with the aim of supporting the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the De Kooy naval airfield and the 50th anniversary of the 860 Aircraft Quadron in 1993.
After the successful celebration of the anniversaries, the wish was expressed to link the Foundation to the Naval Aviation Service in a more permanent context. The 75/50 Foundation was abolished and the Friends of the Naval Aviation Tradition Chamber Foundation was established on 6 May 1994 and recorded by notarial act. The founding act shows that the aim of the foundation is to provide support to the Tradition Chamber of the Naval Aviation Service in Den Helder in its recreational, educational and public relations duties, and to strive to maintain a collection concerning the history of the Naval Aviation Service. She tries to achieve her goal by:
- the maintenance of souvenir objects, models and aircraft;
- the acquisition of "new" material;
- arranging and expanding the photo and video archive;
- setting up and expanding a library;
- mapping the collection;
- the organization of temporary exhibitions;
- acquiring the necessary funds for this and
- organizing donor and theme days.
With the reorganization of the armed forces in 2005, it appeared that the Tradition Rooms at the Armed Forces parts would disappear completely and be included in their entirety in the various armed forces part museums. Fortunately, the solution turned out to be slightly different and the Tradition Aviation Naval Service could continue to exist. The Tradition Room Naval Aviation Service falls under the Group Oldest MLD in organization, but also has a relationship with the Tradition Chamber Committee of the KM.
