β β β β β A very remarkable museum with an eclectic collection ranging from architecture and history to modern art and eco-activism. A great place to visit if you want to see a bit of everything

β β β β β Really nice local museum. Beautiful light modern architecture. They have some stuff about the Roman history of the city, some medieval things, some temporary exhibitions, and something cool for children. The descriptions are mostly in Dutch and German. They serve proper espresso. The people working there were very friendly.

β β β β β This museum has a wonderful permanent collection of Gallo Roman artifacts from the roman version of Nijmegen. As for the modern exhibitions; I'm personally not a fan of combining that with old art. Support the museum; its building needs restoration..

β β β β β Split over 3 floors, the ground floor was laid out with some child friendly exhibits and games focusing on archeological digging. The top floor was the most interesting, with a temporary exhibition about saving the environment and more permanent exhibitions of local Roman artifacts.
Fairly quiet during my visit so you could spend time looking at each piece. Worth trying to find some an alternative language audio guide if possible.
Plan your visit for at least 1.5-2 hours.

β β β β β Really cool museum with lots of exhibitions, including ancient history, modern art, medieval and Roman history among others.
Before I go to the cool things about it, itβs worth mentioning that during my visit I could not find a single sign in English, everything was in Dutch and German with the exception of their temporary exhibition, at that time, βThe Pestβ which offered a mobile audio guide. May not be practical for some people though.
The museum offers 2 floors that can be explored. The underground floor consists of an archeological interactive theme where children and adults can learn about archeology and the different techniques involved, thereβs also other interactive section where you can build things and play with catapults, mostly from Romanian times.
This floor also contains some photography exhibits which seemed also temporary.
The ground floor is just where you can purchase tickets or where the museum cafeteria is located.
The upper floor contains the rest of the exhibitions and the main temporal exhibition.
If you are there just quickly looking I think you can spend 1h, but if you are interested in a certain topic you could be there for more than 2hs.
The museum is free if you have a museum card.

β β β β β Museum Het Valkhof is a museum in the city of Nijmegen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. This museum has existed since 1998 and arose from the merger of the Museum G.M. Kam (1922) for archeology and the Commanderie of St. John for ancient and modern art. The museum's collection includes Roman archaeology, ancient arts and crafts, and modern art. In November 2008 the statutory name of the museum was changed to Stichting Museum Het Valkhof-Kam. Museum Het Valkhof is located at the Kelfkensbos, on the edge of the Valkhof park. In Roman times there was a Roman army camp here. Later, Emperor Charlemagne may have had a palts (palace) built there. The current building was designed by Ben van Berkel. The clean lines and bright colors of the building contrast strongly with the park in which it is located. The architect opted for a central staircase, the bottom of which starts outside on the forecourt. The building was opened on September 14, 1999 by Queen Beatrix. The Archeology department has a varied collection of archaeological art and utensils from the Prehistory, Roman times and Middle Ages of the city and province. Themes such as religion, death and burial, trade and crafts shed light on everyday life when Noviomagus (Nijmegen) was the most important Roman city in the Netherlands. The Ancient Art Department consists of paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and silver objects. The Modern Art department includes works of art from after 1960. Works from the pop art tradition, with its popular visual culture and contemporary expressionism, are strongly represented. The museum organizes several temporary exhibitions per year, including in the past the exhibitions The Van Limburg brothers, The last hours of Herculaneum, Luxury and decadence, Jan Jansen and Swip Stolk, and The world of Katherina. I arrived mid-afternoon on a cold December's day as dusk was starting outside. I had to choose what to see as there was not enough time to see everything. It was still great even though my time here was a little too short. I mainly looked at the Roman and Medieval period exhibitions. Beautiful museum and I will visit again.

β β β β β Beautiful and interesting archeological artifacts and art. So inspiring what people created with minimal tools. They also stacked some trash in some rooms. I'm not sure why. Must be to symbolize post modern dystopias or something. I really enjoyed the various roman and batavian historical artifacts. Especially the masks. I wonder if they where actually used in combat.
It's not that big. If you'd read everything you'll be done in about 2 to 3 hours.

β β β β β It is a very nice museum. There is a lot of history of the Roman time of Nijmegen. A little of paintings of the Medieval and 'new' time. Definitely worth a visit and it's free for Radboud students
