De Leurse industrieel Heerma van Voss was in 1909 de initiatiefnemer van de eerste gemotoriseerde vliegtuigopstijging in Nederland. Deze happening vond plaats in het zuidelijk buitengebied van Etten-Leur ter gelegenheid van het 40-jarig bestaan van zijn suikerfabriek. Deze Wright Flyer-replica is in 2009 onthuld, tijdens de herdenking van 100 jaar luchtvaart in Nederland. Het is het grootste Wright Flyer monument ter wereld, rustend op een stalen paal van zes meter. De landmark is gemaakt door leerlingen van de Vakopleiding Metaal uit Etten-Leur. Een monument, de Gedenknaald, aan de Rijsbergseweg (ter hoogte van de Naaldstraat) herinnert eveneens aan de eerste vliegtuigopstijging. De naald is onthuld in 1935 bij de 25-jarige herdenking van het historische feit.

 WRIGHT FLYER REPLICA
In 1909, the industrialist Heerma van Voss from Leurs was the initiator of the first motorized airplane take-off in the Netherlands. This event took place in the southern outskirts of Etten-Leur on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his sugar factory. This Wright Flyer replica was unveiled in 2009, during the commemoration of 100 years of aviation in the Netherlands. It is the largest Wright Flyer monument in the world, resting on a six meter steel pole. The landmark was created by students of the Metal Vocational Training from Etten-Leur. A monument, the Gedenknaald, on the Rijsbergseweg (near the Naaldstraat) also commemorates the first airplane takeoff. The needle was unveiled in 1935 at the 25th anniversary of the historic event.
