In der unmittelbaren Nähe des Stadtkerns befanden sich vor etwa 2000 Jahren ein römisches Legionslager, Vetera, sowie die Colonia Ulpia Traiana. Die Colonia wurde allerdings um 275 n. Chr. zerstört. Im frühen Mittelalter entstand eine neue Siedlung über dem alten römischen Friedhof, das spätere Xanten mit dem Stift und dann dem Dom St. Viktor (8. Jahrhundert). Sagenumwobener Ursprung der Siedlung ist ein Märtyrergrab. Sie lag also ad Sanctos, lateinisch für „bei den Heiligen“. So erklärt sich der Name. Im Nibelungenlied wird Santenals angeblicher Geburtsort des Helden Siegfried erwähnt. Daher vermarktet Xanten sich als Römer-, Dom- und Siegfriedstadt. Xanten [ksantən] is a middle circle town of the district Wesel. It is located in the northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia at the lower Niederrhein. In the immediate vicinity of the city center were about 2000 years ago a Roman legion camp, Vetera, as well as the Colonia Ulpia Traiana. The Colonia, however, was destroyed around 275 AD. In the early Middle Ages, a new settlement was built over the old Roman cemetery, the later Xanten with the pin and then the Cathedral of St. Victor (8th century). The legendary origin of the settlement is a martyr's grave. So it was ad Sanctos, Latin for "the saints". That explains the name. In the Nibelungenlied Santenal's alleged birthplace of the hero Siegfried is mentioned. Therefore, Xanten marketed as a Roman, Dom and Siegfriedstadt.
