About Trompenburg

Trompenburg is a beautifully designed botanic garden boasting a large collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and tubers. Located in the district of Kralingen just outside Rotterdam city centre, this is a real treasure trove for any plant lover and an oasis of tranquillity for walkers away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Come and enjoy the serene beauty of Trompenburg .

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum was established in 1820. At that time it was one of the many country estates in the judicial district of Cralingen. The oldest part of the garden is in the English landscape style and the atmosphere of the past still lingers there to this day.

Over the years Trompenburg, which now covers eight hectares(twenty acres), has developed into a complex of connected gardens and water features. Of special interest are the ecological Forest Garden De Overtuin, the aviary, the desert hot house and the cosy tea room.

Trompenburg has an excellent network of pathways for all the family to explore. Throughout the year visitors are delighted to find surprises around every corner. Nature’s beauty changes magically with each new season.

Trompenburg offers even more. An exceptional diversity of succulents is grown in the desert hot house. The tea room ‘De Uithoek’ (The Far Corner) has a shady terrace where refreshments and lunch are served.  The seating area at the reception is an ideal place to read a book or magazine and garden souvenirs are available at the shop.

Throughout the year Sunday afternoon guided walks, workshops and lectures are arranged.  Annually there are four big events: Annuals for Sale, The Spring Plant Days, The Autumn Fair and The Christmas Market.

The Forest Garden De Overtuin (The Garden over the Road) that opened in 2018 is a man made bionetwork inspired by the principles of natural balance found in ancient woodlands utilising edible plants. Take a walk here and find out more about this kind of ecosystem.

Explorer’s Trail for Children

Children can follow the Explorer’s Trail where they play hands-on to learn about the garden. This activity is mentioned in the pamphlet “Grenzeloos Groen” (Endlessly Green).

Special Collections

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum boasts a superior collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and tubers. The Dutch National Collections of Quercus (oak), Fagus (beech), Ilex (holly) and Hosta are all found here. Trompenburg grows seven hundred varieties of rhododendron and every year visitors from all over the world come to admire them in bloom. They are at their best in the month of May.

This is also Rotterdam! A beautiful and well maintained botanical paradise. It is accessible in a wheelchair and plenty of resting places. The tea room has a great menu and the food is surprisingly diverse and very good. The cakes are delicious!

A gem in the middle of the city. A lush, very well maintained garden and food forest. You can easily spend a day there. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

First of all, the staff is great. Apart from that, Arboretum where? Any park you visit will be better than this. Only a 70yr old person from Sahara that hasn’t seen a plant in their life would enjoy this. Maintenance is terrible, design even worst. The map looks huge and you can walk it all in 15min. Honestly, send your management to Eden Project in UK, or any arboretum in Melbourne/Sidney so they can learn what to do. Biggest waste of time and money of my visit to Netherlands. Go to Het Park, is not an arboretum but for a park is just better. (Went in March 24th, sunny for weeks apparently)

To really take advantage of the ticket make it the activity for the entire afternoon. There are a few cafes on location where you can stop to get a bite between viewing the gardens. There are several sections to see so it can be a bit of walking. A great calming activity if you're looking to slow your pace in Rotterdam.

An oasis of tranquility in the city. This botanical garden may seem small but it is beautifully landscaped and plants labelled for educational purposes. One may want to spend half a day and to have refreshments in between exploring the different sections. It's open year round but I believe it's prettiest from spring to early autumn. Highly recommended
