Op 4 maart 1590 weten de Nederlandse opstandelingen met een list Breda te veroveren op de Spanjaarden. De list met het turfschip is ook wel bekend als de 'verrassing van Breda'. Het is een van de bekendste voorvallen uit de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. De overwinning was symbolisch van groot belang.

On March 4, 1590, the Dutch rebels managed to conquer Breda from the Spaniards with a ruse. The ruse with the peat ship is also known as the 'surprise of Breda'. It is one of the most famous incidents of the Eighty Years' War. The victory was of great symbolic importance.
