β β β β β Nice place, well maintained and friendly staff. Parking could be better and Covid limitations were somewhat annoying.

β β β β β The famous casemates of Kornwerderzand on the Afsluitdijk. The German Blitzkrieg ran aground in the May days of 1940. Only 225 Dutch soldiers managed to stop about 17.000 Germans. The fortress remained in Dutch hands until the surrender of Dutch forces on 15 May. Commander Boers complimented his men by stating that although they had fought like lions, in other parts of the country their armies had been defeated. Boers himself led the surrender. In 1943, the occupying German military improved the defenses by building three additional bunkers.
In the Casemates Museum stories and exhibitions about the period from the construction of the Afsluitdijk to the period of the βCold Warβ. You take a route where you will pass all casemates and sights that are spread over a considerable area. You really get a sense of how it must have been during the fighting.
Unfortunately the website does not do justice to the museum. It gives little little information about the exhibits themselves and what to expect, it is more of a history lesson. This museum is definitely worth visiting, not only for the history buffs among us but families and tourist alike wil have a great time. The prices are fare and the staff is great.
The Afsluitdijk itself is worth a visit. Itβs a major dam and causeway in the Netherlands. It was constructed between 1927 and 1932 and has a length of 32 kilometers (20 miles) and a width of 90 meters (300 ft), at an initial height of 7.25 meters (23.8 ft) above sea level. The dam serves as a sea barrier to protect the inland against flooding. You can drive your car and see the fight of the Dutch people against the water for yourself!

β β β β β What an impressive museum memorial. When you see and listen to those who were there and you see the remains you understand what battle has been given. The volunteers of the museum deserve every contribution you can give when you are there. We should cherish these remains so we are continously aware how fragile our democratie is.

β β β β β Very well managed museum, very seriously very interesting to visit. The staff speaks German Dutch and English. They gladly help u and can tell u stories not mentioned (some of them veterans)There are three bunkers to visit. Though u need to walk a lot it is worth visiting them all. It takes about 3-4 hours to see and read everything. Parking is free. Coffee and cake is served in the visitors center. They offer a very dedicated book selection, it's one of the vc's not dedicated to sell you nonsense merchandise. The fact prices are declared on the merchandise it only proofs their dedication and the non-usual tourist attraction.

β β β β β Great museum if your interested in military history. Located at the only spot where the German blitzkrieg was stopped! Several of the Dutch and later German enforcements can be visited with extensive explanation. Also info on the Afsluitdijk and atlantikwall. Expect to stay longer then you anticipated.

β β β β β Very interesting place to be, if of course you are interested in history. The bunker is in great shape and placed in a quite big area. And then the proximity to the sea - just great. The only thing that could be improved would be also more information in English. Knowing German I could understand a lot of the Dutch information boards, but someone who doesn't speak Dutch or German wouldn't understand a lot.
