Zonder enig voorbehoud durf ik te zeggen dat dit het mooiste stukje Den Helder qua natuur mag worden genoemd. Ooit lag hier een ´bunkerstad´, zo noemden we die opeenhoping van Duitse bunkers die gelukkig de beschermde status van nu in de jaren 60 van de vorige eeuw nog niet hadden. De hele boel werd zonder omhaal in enkele jaren in opdracht van de gemeente weggepoetst. Zelf heb ik echter nooit begrepen waarom dat nu juist niet met de vuilnisbelt in de Zuidduinen gebeurde, een omgeving die in potentie wezenlijk meer aangetast was. Het was daar écht een smerige boel en al die vuilnistroeptroep ligt er, dacht ik, zelfs nu nog steeds, ´veilig´ onder een laag dekzand... Er groeien daar nu narcissen en gras- en onkruidgewassen, in de dúínen nota bene, Ik fiets daar met die gedachte niet echt lekker meer. In de Helderse duinen is dat gevoel toch anders hoewel je moet beseffen dat die omgeving radicaal en kunstmatig naar onze hand is gezet. Het uiteindelijke doel dat men voor ogen had was ´oorspronkelijkheid´. Daar is de mens namelijk altijd naar op zoek en tijdens die zoektocht vergeet diezelfde mens voor het gemak maar even dat die oorspronkelijkheid zich niet op zijn netvlies laat toveren maar slechts in hemzelf zit. Toen ik er in de vorige eeuw rondliep was alles er volledig opgedroogd, woestijachtig bijna, dat schonk me een oergevoel, een gevoel dat onbetaalbaar was. Nu is het slechts nog een ´mooi plaatje´ met grote plassen water waar je alleen nog omheen fietsen mag, ´betreden is streng verboden´, Waar zou ik zijn wanneer ik in deze tijd zou moeten opgroeien...ergens anders denk ik. This spot of nature is unparalleled next to the sea, Huisduinen and Nieuw Den Helder. Without any reservations, I dare to say that this is the most beautiful part of Den Helder in terms of nature. There was once a 'bunker town' here, as we called this accumulation of German bunkers that fortunately did not yet have the protected status of the 1960s. Everything was cleaned up without ado in a few years on behalf of the municipality. However, I have never understood why this was not the case with the rubbish dump in the Zuidduinen, an environment that was potentially much more affected. It was really filthy there and all that rubbish strip junk is there, I thought, even now, 'safe' under a layer of cover sand ... There are now daffodils and grass and weed crops growing there, in the thins, please, I bike there with that thought not really nice anymore. In the Helderse dunes, that feeling is different, although you have to realize that the environment has been radically and artificially molded to our will. The ultimate goal they had in mind was 'originality'. Man is always looking for that and during that search that same person for the sake of convenience forgets for a moment that that originality cannot be conjured up in his retina, but only resides in himself. When I walked around there in the last century everything had dried up completely, almost desert-like, that gave me a primal feeling, a feeling that was priceless. Now it is just a 'nice picture' with large puddles of water that you can only cycle around, 'treading is strictly prohibited', Where would I be if I had to grow up in this time ... somewhere else I think.
