The famous kaasmarkt or cheese market, is no longer a market, but a tourist attraction. It is unknown when the first market took place however old documents have been found that confirm that a market took place in 1622. It is now a replica cheese market on Friday summer mornings, with cheese porters in traditional costumes, with explanations in several languages.

Today October 1, 2021 was the opening as closing of the famous Dutch Alkmaar cheesemarket. We didn't had the market for 2xyears because covid-19. Let's welcome you at our market again in 2022. However let's enjoy the "8 October Alkmaars ontzet 2021" first

My sister and I travelled to Alkmaar in April 2019, and we think about this town's cheese market often. When we attended this cheese market on a Friday morning, we were shocked to see how many people gathered and how many vendors were there selling cheese and merch. We purchased one of the best aged gouda cheeses from a vendor. We wish we could have remember which one it was because it was delicious! Attending this market was a great way to appreciate the dutch culture. If you are travelling to Alkmaar, make it on a Friday to also visit the cheese market- you won't regret it.

Fascinating Traditional Spectacle! Our family of three adults and two children visited Waagplein in Alkmaar to see the traditional Cheese Market on 26th April 2019 at about 1015. By then a large crowd had already congregated around the cordoned off Waagplein square. The middle of the square was filled with cylindrical cheese blocks about 30cm in diameter and about 10 cm tall. There in the centre were brightly dressed cheese weighers, cheese porters, cheese tossers and cheese loaders all in their bright costumes, attending to their chores while the visitors around the cordon were photographing them and watching them. The staff and the employees too were enjoying themselves and having fun! It was a fascinating spectacle. The Cheese had been traded at Waagplein since the 13th century. The Cheese Market as we see it today is a tourist attraction and is being conducted to preserve the culture and tradition as cheese today is mass produced in modern factories. The market is held on Fridays at 10 am to 3 pm from April through September. In addition to the Cheese Market there are many stalls selling wooden shoes and other curios as well as a Cheese Museum. You can also enjoy a boat cruise in the canals by the Waagplein as well as a walk around the small Alkmaar city.

We had a momentous day visiting the Cheese Market in Alkmaar. We were entertained as we watched the decorated uniformed men carry the heavy loads of cheese, followed by shopping the wonderful market with numerous vendors selling cheese and other great items. A wonderful day in Alkmaar.
