Één van mijn ouders is hier een tijdje verpleegd. Het is een fris en modern gebouw met ronde verdiepingen en een gemeenschappelijk binnenplein waar je een paar winkeltjes kunt vinden en wat kleine activiteiten zoals biljart. Aan het gebouw grenst de kapel en klokketoren van het oude Elisabethziekenhuis dat op haar beurt weer dateert uit het begin van de vorige eeuw. De omgeving is heerlijk rustig, het maakt echter veel uit in welke kamer je terecht komt; er zijn werkelijk prachtige kamers met fantastisch en lommerrijk uitzicht maar ook kamers met ronduit afschuwelijk uitzicht of zelfs een blinde muur. Buiten discussie staat dat uitzicht in je laatste levensdagen van essentieel belang is, net als goede zorg natuurlijk. Het zorgpersoneel zelf is zeer gemotiveerd en hoewel er steeds druk staat op hun urenlijsten en de kwantiteit van het af te leveren werk doen ze toch wat ze kunnen. Eigenlijk is zo´n grootschalig verpleeghuis al helemaal niet meer van deze individualistische tijd maar ja :wat moet je wanneer alles een geldkwestie is geworden. Geen keus dus en maar door gaan en roeien met de riemen die je hebt, dat is dan wat er rest. De schoonmaak is redelijk net als het eten (en de keus daarin) en de betrokkenheid van de werknemers op de vloer maakt veel goed. Toch beklijfd er bij mij steeds het ongemakkelijke gevoel dat het allemaal nog veel beter kan maar ook dat het verpleeghuis zelf gaat voor het maximaal haalbare met de middelen die ze hebben. Dit soort grootschaligheid is over 30 jaar zeker verdwenen, er zijn teveel negatieve bijwerkingen: het verlies aan kwalitatief goede communicatie (korte lijnen) dat door de grote schaal de nek om wordt gedraaid is fnuikend voor élk bedrijf. Je krijgt het gevoel deel uit te maken van ´een verpleegfabriek´, een sentiment dat zowel de werknemer als de patient overvalt wanneer ze er zelf eenmaal deel van uitmaken. De locatie is echt goed, er is ook een prachtig zonnig restaurant en een vriendelijke receptie en ik vond de artsen ter plaatse daadkrachtig en vooral ook de zorgcoördinators ´sprongen er echt uit´. Toch hoop ik er zelf niet te komen liggen maar hoop ik op iets kleinschaligers met meer patiënt gerichte aandacht, korte lijnen en vooral ook wat meer beschikbare tijd van de verpleging voor elke afzonderlijke patiënt zodat je niet alleen het gevoel krijgt ´in leven gehouden te worden´. De opdracht daartoe moet de overheid verschaffen, de werknemers zijn van goede wil.

One of my parents has been nursed here for a while. It is a fresh and modern building with round floors and a communal courtyard where you can find a few shops and some small activities such as billiards. Adjacent to the building is the chapel and bell tower of the old Elisabeth hospital, which in turn dates from the beginning of the last century. The area is wonderfully quiet, but it makes a lot of difference which room you end up in; there are really beautiful rooms with fantastic and leafy views, but also rooms with horrible views or even a blank wall. It is beyond discussion that a view in your last days of life is essential, just like good care of course. The healthcare staff themselves are highly motivated and although their timesheets and the quantity of work to be delivered are always under pressure, they still do what they can. Actually, such a large-scale nursing home is no longer of this individualistic era, but yes: what should you do when everything has become a matter of money. So no choice and just go on and make do with the oars you have, that's what remains. The cleaning is decent as is the food (and the choice in it) and the involvement of the employees on the floor makes up for it. Yet I still have the uncomfortable feeling that things can be much better, but also that the nursing home itself is going for the maximum achievable with the means they have. This kind of large scale will certainly disappear in 30 years, there are too many negative side effects: the loss of high-quality communication (short lines) that is turned away by the large scale is devastating for any company. You get the feeling of being part of a 'nursing factory', a sentiment that overwhelms both the employee and the patient once they themselves become part of it. The location is really good, there is also a beautiful sunny restaurant and a friendly reception and I found the doctors on site decisive and especially the care coordinators 'really stood out'. Yet I hope not to lie there myself, but I hope for something on a smaller scale with more patient-oriented attention, short lines of communication and, above all, more available time of nursing for each individual patient so that you do not only get the feeling of being kept alive ´. The order for this must be given by the government, the employees are of good will.
