Het viaduct ligt ingeklemd tussen de oudere bebouwing. Daardoor zijn donkere, weinige aantrekkelijke stegen ontstaan. Met het donkere, verweerde en veelal bekladde metselwerk en de roestige staalconstructies van het viaduct is de sfeer zelfs sinister. Ook de onderdoorgang voor fietsers en voetgangers aan de noordkant van het spoor is ronduit ongezellig. De trappen vanaf de Lodewijkstraat en Davidstraat hebben fietsgoten maar ze zijn zo steil dat het omhoogduwen van een fiets veel inspanning kost. Gelukkig is de omweg maar kort.
