The Leonardo is a unique neighborhood school in the heart of Amsterdam. Located in Oud-West, hidden behind a gate on the Nassaukade, you come to the beautiful schoolyard. Just completely renovated with lots of greenery, all kinds of climbing equipment, a football field, large sandpit, table tennis table and much more. In the school you will find a pre-school and 1 class of all groups. Group 1 & 2 are divided into 2 kindergarten classes.
It is a so-called 'peaceful school' where the school and the classroom are considered as a society. Lessons are given on different themes in which the students learn (in a playful way) how to make democratic decisions or resolve conflicts. For example, the pupils (who want to) of the upper school are mediators in the schoolyard; they help with possible conflicts.
With an enthusiastic, young director and a nice group of teachers, there is a stable team with an eye and an ear for the students. There is a lot of attention for culture and creativity, there are many excursions to theater or exhibitions. The Inter-School Activities are what really sets this school apart: there are 'workshops' at lunchtime. Each block of 8 weeks, students can register via an app for various workshops such as chess, baking, racket games, programming or football. After a half-hour lunch break, there is an hour for this. A unique way to get in touch with a huge range of activities and also a wonderful break from the school day! (which is until 3:15 pm, except Wed until 12:30 pm).
In other words: a very nice, small school, where children are allowed to be children but above all are stimulated to develop their talents!

A very nice school in a safe place behind a nice fence on the Nassaukade. My children aged 10 and 8 still enjoy going to school every day, and that is worth a lot to us. The team is stable and there is a positive atmosphere with plenty of room for activities and creativity. Great teachers who remain positive towards children and parents even in challenging times. The mid-school workshops are also unique and introduce the kids to things they might not otherwise experience. My son joined the chess association through the TSA!
In short, if you are in doubt about which school to choose, take a look behind the fence. There is a beautiful schoolyard!

They give you a nice picture but no cancer is correct.
Keep looking, parents were practically forced to leave a good review just look at the dates. Choose another school.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My son joined in 2020 and he loves it. The garden and outside playground area has recently been completely renewed and looks lovely. It is a small school with personalized care, where the director and the concierge know each child by name, and the teachers love teaching. Many children are bilingual and the school really mirrors the neighbourhood's mix of cultures. The school was initially built to accomodate children with physical disabilities so it has an amazing indoor gym, which is truly rare for a school in this area. But most of all, the lunch-time workshops (Tussen-Schoolse Atelliers) allow kids to choose a variety of things, from gardening to cooking, from yoga to dutch traditional games... its really what provides that little extra for kids to expand their horizons!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My son has attended this school for the past 3 years. We are absolutely happy with the care and attention given to him and all individual students. The school is relatively small, which makes it a personal school with great interaction between parents, teachers and students. The school is following the `peaceful school´ principle stimulating students to resolve conflicts together, listen and be attentive. There is also a focus on creativity and other interest through its offering of various activities when the kids are free in the afternoon e.g. chess, yoga or creative art classes. The school stands for Its also a diverse school with many different nationalities giving it a great mix of cultures. Highly recommended!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our 3 children (11, 9 and 4 years old) have gone to this school since preeschool. They all started at 2,5 years old, so when they turn 4 and needed to join Groep 1-2, it was an easy transition process since they knew the school, the teachers and older children.
The schoolyard was renovated last year with a crowdfunding campaign and there is a beautiful playground, a small football field, a big sand pitch, a ping pong table and a lot of green. I also like very much that there is a worm hotel in the garden, which teaches kids about the importance of composting and living sustainably.
The teachers and the rest of the staff are nice and approachable and the teaching method puts a lot of emphasis not only on what they need to learn, but how they need to behave with respect with each other.
Last but not least, there is the possibility for children to sign up to activities after the lunch break where they get to learn and get interested into different topics (like yoga, working with wood, cooking, learning about bees and birds, chess, etc)
I would definitely recommend this school to other parents. Our kids have also made great friends from the neighbourhood and are happy to go to school every day.
