★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It supposed to be a beer fest, with beers from every province of Holland. Some were sold out, and for a tasting it was very expensive. On top of that you also had to pay to use the restroom. It was very dissappointing, unfortunately

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ At the end of the Eastern Dock (Oosterdok), next to the Marine Museum (Scheepvaarmuseum), lies a trapezoid island in the Kattenburg neighborhood. The Dutch Navy still occupies a goodly piece of it, but about half of the emplacement has been handed over to the city for exploitation. I started my walking route (based on Rondje Oosterdok, you can find it online) from the Kattenburgerstraat entrance, at the informational plaquette across from the entrance gate. The first thing you see is the still-occupied zone of the emplacement on the right, barred shut and forbidding. The Long Room however, straight across the lawn, on the water front, was transformed into hotel cum restaurant (Homeland boarding house), is bustling with visitors. Further down the road there is the Navy water sports basin (closed to the public), the Connection School (Verbindingsschool), still used by the Navy Recruiting department, the TOKM wings, looking a bit like Baba Yaga houses on stilts, and via the parched, water side lawns along the Golden Ball, the old officer's club building (check out the open gym on the side), the Log School with restaurant Scheepskameel (Ship's Camel), to the Commandant's bridge, where one can cross to the nerdy alternative Dijkspark, home to Mediamatic and Hannekes Boom. Awesome tour, recommended.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Easy to find, next to the Nemo museum, a beautiful structure surrounded by waters where boats usually park around it. Simply gorgeous.
