De kunstenaar is Mari Andriessen (Haarlem, 1897 – 1979) en studeerde in 1923 af aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Hij maakte reliëfs met Bijbelse voorstellingen, vlak en gestileerd. In de tweede helft van de jaren dertig kreeg Andriessen andere opdrachtgevers en begon hij zijn beelden te modelleren, zodat ruimtelijke sculpturen ontstonden. De gebaren en de lichaamshoudingen van zijn beelden, die voornamelijk mensfiguren zijn, werden steeds uitgesprokener. Andriessen zat in het verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
