β β β β β Cute little landmark, which appears to be a private residence. Nice to swing by, but wouldn't go out of my way to see this.

β β β β β The Singel takes its name from the Dutch word for "belt" or "loop" and originally functioned for protective and water management purposes as a moat around the city from 1480 to 1585 when Amsterdam expanded even further and work commenced on the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals. The house at number 7 illustrates one of the earliest forms of tax evasion. Properties were taxed according to the width of their frontage, hence the unusually steep staircases still to be found in historical buildings throughout the city. To avoid the taxes as much as possible, less wealthy owners created properties with tiny exteriors. It is often claimed that this is the world's narrowest house and, while this can be debated, it is in fact the house with the narrowest facade in Amsterdam, being just over a meter wide. Looks however can be deceiving however as this is just the rear of the property and the front is much wider. Although the house is not open to the public, it's a great place to come and take photographs.

β β β β β So arrived and amazed to see such a narrow building.
Just about to take a photo and a guy opens the door and there is a door to the right of the entrance door. Looks like the downstairs of the building next door is part of the small house and not what you see from the outside.
Small on the outside and big on the inside

β β β β β This "attraction" showed up on some itinerary online or in a guidebook, and the fact is, it's hardly worth mentioning. If you happen to be walking down the same street this house is located on, then sure, take a look at it. But please, take my advice and DO NOT go out of your way to see this. We probably walked thirty minutes in the rain to see this facade and it's just not worth it. At least I got a cute picture?
