The origin of Baba and can be traced back to the Chinese Ming dynasty, More than 400 years ago.
Princess Ham Bao-li left China to get married with the sultan (king) of Melaka.
The marriage established a kinship and diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

Since then many Chinese people started trading with or working in Melake, Penang and Singapore, and some of them settled down in these coastal cities.
Most of these Chinese immigrants were male. Some of them married Malay women. Their sons were called " Baba" and their daughters were called " Nyonya".

Broughtup in their cultural background and living habits of the both races, the Malay speaking Babas and Nyonyas in their Sarong outfits not only keep their Chinese names, but also inherited the Chinese conventional idea of men leaving the house to work and women staying at home. Thus, Nyonyas were all culinary experts before marriages- and this was the origin of Nyonya Cuisine.

Nyonya dishes from Melake, Singapore and Penang differ in taste. People in Melake and Singapore, geographically closer to Indonesia, prefer a sweeter taste, the strong flavor of coconut, coriander and dill. On the other hand influenced by Thai cooking, the Penang Nyonya dishes tend to be relatively more sour and more spicy. Penang Nyonya dishes are often seasoned with belacham apart from other spices.

Preparing a savory Nyonya dinner is never easy as in involves so much grinding of herbs and spices.
Spices frequently used include kunyit, lengkuas, daun, peru, pandan leaves Nyonya desserts are often colorful cakes made with ingredients like sweet potatoes, glutinous rice, coconut sugar and coconut syrup.

Always greeted with big portions of tasty Malaysian food! Had the hainanese chicken rice and kuey toew with sambal and roti canai. Could use a lil bowl of soup for the chicken rice like we get back home so the rice isn't too dry!

Was walking around and very surprised to come across this small Malaysian restaurant. Quite busy during dinner time. Asam ayam was quite authentic - i quite enjoyed it. Worth a try.

It was my first time eating malaysian food but I really enjoyed it. This restaurant is run by a kind older couple who gave us suggestions on what to order. The Hainanese chicken rice is a must try.

Unfortunately we weren't blown away by the dishes we got...it actually got worse after the corona period (first time we went there it was okay ish) but the 2nd time we went here was disappointing. We ordered the roti canai, Tom yum gong and the laksa + hainan chicken but it was not all that special in my opinion...the noodles of the laksa were kinda soggy and definitely tasted like packaged noodles from the Amazing Oriental...also the bowl was pretty small for what you pay (14 eur). The Hainan chicken was not that bad actually but the rice was very dry. If they improve their cooking I would like to try again but for me it's a no go at this moment.

If you're in the mood for Malaysian cuisine, there aren't many options. In the city where I live, for example, there isn't a single one. Thank goodness there are some in Amsterdam and here you can get a passable curry shrimp laksa. Unfortunately, the chicken rice lacked a bit of flavor. Portion sizes are good. Service is nice. The restaurant is a bit cramped. No credit cards accepted.
