one of the two worst places for ribs i've encountered in this country.
the other was in Den Haag right next to the Pathe Buitenhof theater.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The latest adaptations are not the best. All surfaces are now smooth and do not absorb sound. But that they have taken bottled wine off the list and replaced it with one sort "merlot" in a caraffe is unforivable. That particular merlot is vile. Won't be going there again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very basic pub. Food is ok. Quite busy, due to that the staff don't pay a lot of attention to you. Got the wrong order served, but the staff handled it well. Wouldn't visit it again, as it's not really worth the price.

Food was disappointing compared to my last visit: less choice and meat was not that good, chocolate ice cream dessert was small and disappointing. Used to be better! Price is reasonable. Go here for the beers, eat elsewhere!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We live in Leiden and finally decided to try the Hooykist. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. We tried the mixed grill and the varkenshaas. Meat was mediocre in relation to the price. Fries were tasteless and certainly did not look like dikke frieten as mentioned on the menu. Atmosphere was ok, but furniture looked old and old fashioned and our table was full of candle wax that wasn’t cleaned. Waiter worked his socks off which was a bit embarrassing because the owner seemed to be carelessly sitting and drinking at the bar. Conclusion: avoid this venue, there are much better restaurants in Leiden for the same price or even cheaper.

Got the vegetarian burger + fries, absolutely delicious and on top of that pickles and grilled veggies FOR FREE.
Very tasty food, fresh veggies and amazing service.
