Тюрьма Расфуис стала первым шагом на пути к реформированию голландской пенитенциарной системы — здесь мужчины, получившие срок, проходили трудотерапию и перевоспитание. The same prisoners who sought to avoid compulsory work were imprisoned in a special cell, where there was no longer any opportunity to evade labor: every morning and evening, in accordance with the rhythm of the ebb and flow in Amsterdam, the cell was flooded with water, and willy-nilly had to be pumped out with a special pump, which could not take less than two or three hours. It is believed that after a week of such labor, inmates began to ask to return to the workshop for logs and red wood shavings. In 1815, the prison was closed, and its building was demolished several decades later, from 1892. It was assumed that a swimming pool would open on the site of the former colony, but instead the Kalvertoren shopping center, one of the capital's most famous department stores, was built. Only one element remained of the prison building - the arch of the entrance, made in an unusual architectural style, combining the traditions of ancient architecture with neoclassicism and even Gothic.
