★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I returned to China Garden today on a trip from Brussels and was disappointed. I pointed out that they should take the shark fin soup off the menu as I am a defender of all shark species and was embroiled in an argument with the waiter saying that it is not really shark fin soup but another fish and that real shark fin soup would be much more expensive. I countered that it should not be a problem for them to smuggle shark fins out of China or Singapore, learning later that the owners came from Singapore which still has a problem with shark fin trade. But saying it's a different kind of fish does not help the issue as it still says "shark fin soup" on the menu.
Secondly, I asked for cold tap water twice and was told it's not their policy to charge customers for tap water, which is ridiculous because I wanted it for free with my meal. They insisted that they have to pay the rent and only serve bottled water.
The spicy soup was nondescript, gluey and not spicy at all and no salt, pepper, soy sauce was suggested. The main course, Ajam saté sauce with noodles, was OK, served with sambal and soy sauce and plenty but cannot compete with real Chinese and Vietnamese caterers in Brussels serving these dishes for the same price. All in all a disappointment and I will not return next year to argue with the waiter again.
