Wow! When you see at what rate ships bridge a 11.35 meter drop there: unbelievable! And the view over the Juliana Canal is equally impressive.

Zur Behebung des Verkehrshindernisses des seit 1822
nicht mehr schiffbaren Teil der Maas erbaute man
zwischen 1925 - 1935 den 36 km langen Juliana-Kanal
zwischen Maastricht und Maasbracht.
Um den Höhenunterschied von 23,60 m (!) auf der
Gesamtstrecke zu bewältigen, verfügt der Kanal über
drei Schleusen.
Benannt wurde er nach Juliana Louise Emma Marie
Wilhelmina (*1909 – 2004), Prinzessin der Niederlande,
Oranje-Nassau, Lippe-Biesterfeld, Herzogin von
Mecklenburg und Königin der Niederlande von
1948 - 1980. Sie setzte 1925 den ersten symbolischen
Spatenstich für den Kanal.
Ein eher unscheinbares Denkmal an der Kreuzung vor der Schleuse (bei Einfahrt auf rechter Seite) erinnert an Piet Walraeven und Harie Custers, welche 1940 an dieser Schleuse ihr Leben für die Freiheit ließen.
Heute vor 75 Jahren (1944)
Am 30.09.1944 zerstören deutsche Sprengkommandos im Zuge der Politik der Verbrannten Erde 240 Handelsschiffe im Kanal und in Maasbracht.
