Stadsbrug Weert - Eindhovenseweg

The Stadsbrug van Weert (Limburgs: Statterbrök) is a bridge over the South Willemsvaart in Weert. The bridge is located in the center of the city and forms the main connection between the center and the north side of the canal, next to the Biesterbrug just down the road. The current bridge is a lifting bridge with four pylons and dates from 1968. In 2009 major maintenance work took place. The city bridge is of the lifting bridge type because of the possibility of realizing a wide road surface and the impossibility of building dike bodies and approach roads that would be necessary for a fixed bridge. This is due to the proximity of buildings in the center. The bridge is one of the main approach roads to the city center of Weerter. When the bridge is open, this will cause major traffic congestion in the center. The current lifting bridge is located a few tens of meters east of the old City Bridge, which was in use until 1968. The then swing bridge was replaced due to capacity problems. The bridge was too narrow for the growing road traffic, and the pivot in the middle of the canal was an obstacle to shipping. Moreover, the bridge had to be opened and closed manually, which took a lot of time. The site of the old bridge is still clearly visible. Next to the main carriageway leading to the current bridge on the square in front of the bridge, there is a narrower parallel carriageway that is currently closed to traffic. This is the former approach to the bridge. In 2009 the bridge was completely renovated and renewed by the municipality of Weert. The need for maintenance became painfully clear in 2008 when an engine of the lifting facility failed, causing the bridge deck to fall on a passing freighter. The rapid response of the bridge operator who pressed the 'emergency brake' prevented too much damage to the ship and the bridge. There were also more and more minor technical problems in the years before maintenance. During the maintenance work, the bridge deck was completely painted and provided with a new road surface. Technical installations have been replaced and the pylons have been made matt black and fitted with LED mood lighting. After completion of the work, the management and maintenance of the bridge was transferred by the municipality to Rijkswaterstaat.
