★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Met de bouw van de delta werken is hier in de Hollandse IJssel een stormvloedkering geplaatst. Deze beschermd het achterland van de rivier tot net voorbij Gouda (de waaiersluis). De Hollandse IJssel kan middels de hefdeuren afgesloten worden bij springtij. Voor dat deze kering gebouwd was hadden de sluizen in de dijken langs deze getijde rivier, zoals bij Gouda, stormvloeddeuren. Deze zijn nu overbodig.
A storm surge barrier has been placed here in the Hollandse IJssel with the construction of the delta works. This protects the hinterland of the river until just past Gouda (the impeller lock). The Hollandse IJssel can be closed through the lifting doors at spring tide. Before this barrier was built, the locks in the dikes along this tidal river, such as near Gouda, had storm surge doors. These are now superfluous.
