W	Willem Verbeek on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Vandaag staat het Dal van de Kermis op het program, de attracties zijn zeer verschillend. Sommige ronduit van twijfelachtige allure en omstreden, andere tonen natuurlijke pracht en schoonheid. Dan heb je nog de categorie vrijwel onzichtbaar, ijl, vluchtig, ongrijpbaar, uit andere werelden. Mijn ijzeren staaf parkeer ik vlakbij de troon van Cupido en Amor met wie ik heb afgesproken. We zeilen door het park van Maurits en dalen af naar beneden, niet gehinderd door de zigzaggende trappen die hier zijn aangelegd. Niemand die ons ziet. De brede stadsbeek, gevoed door een Wetering vanuit Bedburg-Hau, bepaalt beeld en sfeer van dit park. Stroomt naar links door Kleef, gaat over in het Spoykanaal en komt bij Griethausen met een sluis uit in de Oude Rijn. Naar rechts kom je in een populair wandel- en fietsgebied tot aan Schloss Moyland. Kan best leuk zijn, maar voor ons geen bier zuipen in de Königsgarten. Ook niet met een waterfiets of kano over de hier en daar flink vervuilde beek. Wij willen wolkenluchten en verboden vruchten proeven, Boomreuzen en Bosgeesten betrappen op vreemde rituelen. De strijd om het bestaan gadeslaan, kunst maken van oude, prachtig verweerde stenen en ordinaire ijzeren hekken die met spiegels in het water bomen vangen. En vooral ontroerd raken door de schoonheid van een zwaan met de kop verstopt onder water op zoek naar voedsel. Wij raken niet uitgekeken op gruwel, kwelling en strijd om ons heen, worden baldadig en vrolijk tegelijk. Vooral als Cupido met een brede grijns vertelt over degene naar wie hier zowat alles is vernoemd: prins Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen. Hij staat in Kleef hoog aangeschreven om zijn tuinkunst maar is ook flink door de mand gevallen. Johan Maurits, bijgenaamd de Braziliaan, is in de 17e eeuw in Nederlandse dienst in Brazilië. Misschien doet ie goeie dingen, maar is ook actief in de slavenhandel en verdient daar goed aan. De Nederlanders zijn natuurlijk geen haar beter. Hij staat nu in Nederland ter discussie, zijn standbeeld in de foyer van het Mauritshuis in Den Haag is in 2018 verwijderd. Het mooie hieraan, zegt Cupido, en hij lacht, grinnikt, is dat hij de achterneef is van onze eigenste Willem van Oranje, Prins Pils. Die Oranjes zijn allemaal boefjes als het al geen boeven zijn, altijd geweest, tot op de dag van vandaag. Voorbeelden hoef ik jullie niet te geven, die liggen voor het oprapen. Gelach alom, hilariteit, grimmig genieten. We wassen onze handjes en gaan terug op huis aan. Today the Fairground is on the program, the attractions are very different. I park my iron bar close to the throne of Cupido and Amor with whom I have agreed. The wide city stream, fed by a Wetering from Bedburg-Hau, determines the image and atmosphere of this park. Flows to the left through Kleef, becomes the Spoy Canal and arrives at Griethausen with a lock in the Oude Rijn. To the right you enter a popular walking and cycling area up to Schloss Moyland. Can be nice, but we don't drink beer in the Königsgarten. Also not with a pedal boat or canoe over the here and there heavily polluted stream. We want to taste cloudy skies and forbidden fruits, catch Tree giants and Forest spirits for strange rituals. Watch the battle for existence, make art from old, beautifully weathered stones and ordinary iron gates that capture trees with mirrors in the water. And above all being touched by the beauty of a swan with its head hidden under water in search of food. We do not get bored of horror, harassment and struggle around us, we become rowdy and cheerful at the same time. Especially when Cupid with a broad grin tells about the person after whom almost everything is named here: Prince Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen. He is highly regarded in Kleef for his garden art, but has also fallen far behind. Johan Maurits, nicknamed the Brazilian, was in Dutch service in Brazil in the 17th century. Maybe he does good things, but is also active in the slave trade and makes good money from that. The Dutch are of course no better. He is now under discussion in the Netherlands, his statue in the foyer of the Mauritshuis in The Hague was removed in 2018. The great thing about this, Cupido says, and he laughs and chuckles, is that he is the second cousin of our very own Willem van Oranje, Prince Pils. Those oranges are all crooks if they are not crooks, always have been, even today. I do not have to give you any examples, they are there for the taking. Laughter everywhere, hilarity, grim enjoyment. We wash our hands and head back home.
