Green park surrounding apartment blocks Gouden Leeuw and Groenhoven that were built mid-1970s by architect Joop van Stigt. Joop van Stigt (Amsterdam, January 6, 1934 – November 4, 2011) was a Dutch architect in Amsterdam. His style is part of structuralism. Structuralism in Dutch architecture and urban planning is a movement that is characterized by buildings with a geometric structure composed of often small units that are related to the human dimension. Structuralism began in the middle of the 20th century and was a reaction to CIAM functionalism (rationalism), which led to urbanism without an identity of the inhabitants and the built environment. The new movement belonged to the avant-garde, while general urban planning continued to develop according to the old CIAM principles of functionalism until the 1970s. According to functionalism, a style in architecture, the form and appearance of a building should be determined by its function. Professor Joop van Stigtpark is the unofficial name of a park-like environment in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. The park received its name in 2013, when local residents developed an initiative for naming a green strip with waterway between the Gouden Leeuw and Groenhoven series of flats. This collection of flats was built around 1974 to a design by architect Joop van Stigt, who died in 2011. It was too early for an official name as the name giver must have been dead for at least five years. Yet there is an official "street sign" of the Amsterdam-Zuidoost district. The park begins in the south at the Bijlmerdreef and ends in the north on an ornamental water north of the aforementioned flats at the northernmost part of the Bijlmerweide. The western border would be formed by the kilometre-long Bijlmerdreef metro bridge; the eastern border is as yet undetermined. The park is intersected on the vertical axis (north-south) by the Gaasperparkpad and on the horizontal axis (east-west) by the Ganzenhoefpad. In the park is the Monument to the city of Amsterdam (Monument voor de stad Amsterdam) by Pieter Engels. The Monument to the City of Amsterdam is a work of art, which is located in Amsterdam-Zuidoost.
